Maximizing Success with Donor Eggs in IVF: Insights and Options – ARC Summit
In donor oocyte treatments, couples have the option of using either a known or an anonymous donor, with anonymous donors being the more common choice. These can be live donors or sourced from egg banks, which are increasingly popular due to their convenience and the ready availability of eggs. Egg banks also offer the advantage of matching known donor characteristics and the possibility of obtaining multiple oocytes from the same donor for future siblings.
Today, I’ve provided an overview of evaluating infertile couples. Subsequent speakers will delve into more specific areas. It’s beneficial for generalist clinicians to refer patients to a reproductive specialist after three unsuccessful cycles of clomiphene citrate or another ovulation induction method, as normally, 40-50% of young women with normal fertility should conceive by then.
If performing intrauterine insemination (IUI) and the sperm motility count is below 5 million, it’s less likely to succeed, and in vitro fertilization (IVF) might be a better option. Ideally, an IUI specimen should contain at least 5 to 100 million sperm. Additionally, in cases of tubal disease or pelvic adhesions, more intensive treatments like IVF may be required.
For couples with a history of spontaneous pregnancy losses, IVF and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) have proven highly beneficial, particularly for genetic issues like balanced translocations.
