The lab’s next challenge is to select the optimal embryo for transfer, targeting a single, healthy pregnancy. We use various methods to ensure the best choice:
- Morphological Assessment: Conventionally, embryos are graded based on their appearance through direct observation.
- Time-lapse Imaging: This allows us to monitor embryonic development continuously from fertilization onward, providing valuable insights into the embryo’s viability.
- AI and Software Tools: New technologies use algorithms to predict the most viable embryo, although these tools are not yet widespread.
- Genetic Testing: We analyze either the embryo directly or the polar body from the egg to assess chromosomal makeup for potential diseases and ensure genetic health.
- Embryo Biopsy: This precise technique involves extracting cells from the embryo to test for chromosomal normalcy and specific genetic defects. However, it’s crucial to note that the biopsy’s location on the embryo can affect the results, introducing discrepancies in chromosomal data depending on where the sample is taken.
Further, less invasive methods like analyzing cell-free DNA are emerging, enhancing our ability to evaluate the embryo without physical intrusion. These advancements and ongoing debates highlight the complexity and ethical considerations in modern reproductive technology.
