What is Gender Selection

Gender selection, also known as sex selection is a method of fertility treatment that allows parents to know the sex of their offspring's sex prior to implantation.  This method of determining the sex of the offspring is also commonly known as family balancing. Sex selection is often chosen by couples to balance the sex of their family.

For example a couple that has four boys may desire to have their 5th child be a girl.  Another reason for sex selection is to eliminate the possibility of genetic disorders that are linked to a specific sex.  For example hemophilia, an inherited disorder that effects blood clotting is located on the X chromosomes.

Patients that carry this disorder have the option of undergoing sex selection procedures to ensure that they have female offspring so as to eliminate the possibility of having a child with hemophilia.
